Meeting our MP Charles Walker

Charles Walker, M.P. visits Roselands to congratulate Jane Carson on 40 years at Roselands School.

Members of the pupil council joined Headteacher, Jane Carson, to welcome Executive Headteacher of The Hoddesdon School Trust, David Kennedy and our local M.P. Charles Walker, on a visit to Roselands.

After touring the school they presented Ms Carson with a certificate and thanked her for her dedicated service to Roselands and the local community.

Jane Carson joined Roselands in September 1977, as a new teacher, when the school was just two years old and had two classes with a total of 44 pupils.

She taught across all age groups and stages, becoming Deputy Head to Len Castree, the school’s first Headteacher. Jane succeeded him when he retired, becoming the school’s second Headteacher in 1993.

‘It has been a privilege to work with so many local families, being part of the school’s growth and development.’ Over the years Jane trained to teach many of the sports, becoming an umpire for rounders and netball and secretary for the local school sports association. She became a swimming coach, taking the first lesson in the pool which was opened on the school’s site.

Gradually extending the range of instrumental lessons for pupils she started a school orchestra, choir and a variety of ensembles who perform regularly. She represents primary headteachers on the Herts Music Service Music Forum.

Being a class teacher when the first computer arrived at the school Jane was fortunate to trial IT and lead in the introduction of computer challenges, trialing email and the use of the Internet together with the concept of wireless networks. Roselands joined just 3 other schools in Hertfordshire to investigate the use of IT in schools. Appearances in national press and TV presented the achievements and led to the school’s practice of integrating ICT into their curriculum.

Jane’s commitment to her role has been acknowledged with a distinction for Primary Head of the Year in SE England in 1998 and a lifetime achievement award from the Borough of Broxbourne in 2014 for her service to young people.

Assistant Heads Lucy Jones and Sara Hill joined forces with Jane’s daughters (who both attended Roselands as pupils themselves) to organize a surprise party to mark the event. Founder Headteacher Len Castree was joined by present and past staff, families, pupils and friends to mark the occasion.
